What has actually been announced
On 9th July 2026, McDonald's Japan confirmed a summer-long collaboration with Pokémon, timed to the company's 55th anniversary in Japan and Pokémon's 30th. Rather than a single drop, the campaign unfolds in four staged announcements: two on 10th July, a burger line-up on 16th July, and the Happy Meal reveal on 31st July. Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle are among the Pokémon confirmed to appear.
Alongside this, McDonald's Japan has renewed its partnership with Pokémon GO. From 20th July to 1st September, its roughly 3,000 Japanese restaurants will function as PokéStops in the game. McDonald's Japan was a launch partner when Pokémon GO arrived in Japan in July 2016; this is its return as an official partner after around six years.
Why overseas collectors should pay attention
Here is the honest position: almost nothing about the physical items is public. We do not know what the Happy Meal contains. We do not know whether trading cards are involved at all. Anyone telling you otherwise on 9th July is guessing.
What is established is the pattern. Japan-only fast food tie-ups are produced for a domestic audience, distributed through domestic channels, and simply stop existing once the campaign ends. There is no restock, no international release, no second printing. Collectors outside Japan who want an item from a campaign like this generally have a window measured in weeks, and that window is inside Japan.
That is not a claim about what anything will be worth later. It is a claim about availability, which is a different thing entirely, and the only one we are prepared to make.
What we are doing
We are based in Japan. We will be reading each of the four announcements as they land on 10th, 16th and 31st July, and we will tell you plainly what is in them, including when the answer is "nothing that would interest an overseas collector."
If something does emerge that is worth sourcing, we will say so, and we will say what we can and cannot get. Until then, this is a watch, not a buy.
